Post-rock & Post-metal: The 50 Best Releases of 2018

First off, some words on what this list is about. With over 700 releases on our initial list, later narrowed down to a short list of nearly 300 which you can see at this link, it was by no means an easy choice.? While we think these 50 releases below deserve more recognition for their musical quality on multiple fronts, – from composition to instrumentation, production and more –; it boils down to personal taste, to what intrigued, motivated, fueled and healed us most this year. And the list was put together without consideration of album length, popularity, mainstream appeal or label backing . So, there is a wide range here, from LPs of pre-eminent bands with a long career and huge following to EPs of underground acts with little following and support, all delivering remarkable music.
Most of the albums you’ll see here don’t exactly correspond to the popular preconceptions of the term(s) or to stereotypical musical structures that became associated with the genre over the last two decades. If that is something you’re looking for, this list may not be a particularly helpful asset for you. That said, if you’ve a penchant for either genre-crossing or heavy/abrasive music, you can hopefully discover some new favorites here. This is, in short, a “catch-all” list; the bulk of which is comprised of crossover albums that incorporate post-rock/metal elements but also pull from other musical territories like progressive, doom, sludge, math, shoegaze, ambient, electronica and more. For bands or albums you haven’t listened to before, the “More Info” sections under each entry will hopefully provide some guidance on what you can expect to hear.
While there is no individual ranking, there are two broad and alphabetically-presented groups of 25, with the former making just a little more impact on us. ? Finally, there is also a Spotify playlist link at the end of the post – but we hope you’ll use it for discovery purposes and support the bands, if you like what you hear, by purchasing directly from them .
Enjoy.

Enjoy.
